How To Optimise a Webpage for SEO
Trying to optimise a web page for SEO can be tricky. There are a few factors one needs to consider when deciding what they would like the web page to target. Some questions to ask yourself be optimising a web page is what is the purpose of the page? Do you want people to make a specific action on this page? Is this page solely to provide information?
Once you have outlined exactly what the purpose of the page is, you can start to implement an SEO strategy to gain visibility and traffic to your content. In this post, I will share crucial steps to take when optimising a web page for SEO
When poising content for a web page you must conduct keyword research. There is no way around it, unless you already know which words are converting in your industry. The easiest tool to help you through this is Google’s keyword planner. We mentioned this in a previous post as part of our 5 favourite SEO tools.
Keyword planner allows you the option of inserting keywords into a search bar, selecting your location and identifying which words are valuable based on how many searches it gets per month. Keyword planner will also give you similar suggestions for what you typed in as well as the competition for each word.
Conduct your keyword research and identify at least 5 keywords for your web page. Select one primary keyword, and then select a few secondary keywords to use which your content focuses on. Remember, variations and synonyms are important to meet searcher’s intent.

The URL structure is one of the most important aspects of a web page. An easy to read URL structure will ensure Google can easily crawl your page, and that readers will know what the page is about.
When naming a URL, ensure you keyword has been included or a word describing the content on the page. For example, if you are optimising a page on SEO services for your location the URL structure should something like the following:
A URL structure like this includes dashes, which is important because search engines can’t read underscores. Always ensure your URL structure is easy to read, includes keywords and is separated by dashes.
Length of Content
The minimum required word count for a web page is 300 words. This blog post has over 800 and so do most of the pages on this website. Why? Because content offers value and Google knows this. A page that has a lack of content is also considered to have a lack of information about what it can offer users.
Content marketing allows you to add headings to your content such as H1’s, H2’s and more. In addition, you can also include secondary keywords and variations of your primary keyword within your content. Most of all, your content must be unique. Unique content is valuable content, because, well it’s unique and “new”. If Google can find your content in other places on the web on other websites, the value of the content will decrease, because it’s not unique.
Another thing to include within your content is contextual links. Contextual links are links within text. By linking to SEO Consulting, I am adding a contextual link. These types of links are important because Google knows users read text, and if the text includes links it’s a natural way to navigate pages. Of course, do not overload your content with links or keywords.
You have probably seen the term H1, or H2 before. In case you didn’t know, this stands for Heading. A webpage needs one, and only one heading 1. The H1 tag on a web page is responsible for telling search engines what the theme of the page is.
If you have multiple H1 tags, search engines become confused and are unsure of what the web page is about. Always ensure you have one H1 Tag for every page and that the H1 includes your target keyword. Remember to use H2, H3, H4, H5 and H6 Tags as supporting headings in your content.
Images are important because they break up content quite well. No wants to read continuous paragraphs of text without a few images. Images, such as illustrations, are also a great way to digest content. This is because images are easy to read and take less effort than reading a paragraph of text.
Regarding SEO for images, ensure you have named the image file correctly. For example, always name the image file name by using words that describe the image. Try being as clear as possible and if you can, use keywords in your file name. Similarly, to your file name, an ALT attribute stands for alternative text, and this is used for those who are vision impaired.
When you assign an ALT Attribute to an image, the text can be read out loud for those who can’t see, preferably by Google. Google and other search engines can’t read images, they can only read text. So, by assigning an ALT attribute to an image, you are allowing search engines to ‘read’ you images.
If you can implement all the tips mentioned in this post when optimising your webpage, you will be on the right track. Overall, make sure your content is unique and helpful. Google places a large emphasis on whether content is helpful for users.
